Learning through play

by David

I have been toying around for a while with the idea of designing a number of learn through play apps! In the grand scale of game design its not the fanciest thing to do I know, but I feel if you can design something that helps someone young or old you are on to a good thing.

At the moment myself and a good coder friend of mine are just in the early stages of pro-typing. Some early concept designs are below. We plan to launch with a phonic learning game based around the alphabet, where the preschool child can learn by interaction, guided through the app with clear audio instruction and simple to follow symbols.  As I said its very early days yet but we are very excited about the possiblities as we think of the possiblities not only for this young age group but also primary and secondary age groups.

Xcom

by David

Spied a new Xcom movie with designers commentary. I really liked the addition of the agent control system and the ablitity to choose to reuse alien tech or keep it and use it as a resource to make another item at a later date. Watch and enjoy :)

Game Happiness!!

by David

Meant to post this ages ago… Had a blast on Modern Warfare 3 at Xmas and it’s all it should be cinematically, technically, visually, scripting and so on. But how is it later that day I got more satisfaction from completing Angry Birds!!

MW3 did not offer anything new to me, it was like watching a rerun of my favourite movie… Comforting and safe…

So why did a casual 2d game using simple physics make me happier? Possibly that I had the feeling of complete control over the level I was playing. Every action I initiated was easy to see and watch the consequence of it, the chain reaction I had caused by shooting one object into another object.

Maybe MW3 is so good has so may layers that the shear brilliance, time and effort put into it are taken for granted and like many current FPS are similar in so many ways. or maybe I’m just getting old…….
